Food and Fibre Youth Council

Role of Council

  • To explore and prioritise issues to be considered by the Network and how that may be conducted.
  • To actively promote the recommendations and views of the Network, and to ensure that outcomes from the Network activity are followed through to their logical conclusions.
  • To communicate with the Network to ensure that they are fully engaged and informed.
  • To provide advice to Ministers, MPI and other stakeholders on issues relating to young people in the food and fibre sector.
  • To liaise with MPI, NZYF and other key stakeholders, as necessary, to ensure that the Network is well utilised, independent, and well respected.
  • To connect to Sector Action Plans and any other initiatives that are current in the industry.
  • To act as young ambassadors for the sector and support and promote the attraction and retention of young people.

Term of appointment

  • Term of appointment shall be two years.
  • Initial appointments will be set up so that there is a rotation developed where three are up for reappointment one year and four the next year. 
  • Retiring members may reapply.


  • It is expected that there will be no more than 1 meeting per month and no more than 10 meetings a year.
  • Meetings will be a mix of face to face and online.

​Remuneration and expenses

  • All expenses for participating in the Council will be covered.
  • There will be no remuneration for participating. 
  • In the case of members having to take time off work to attend, their employer will be encouraged to support the Network by way of extending leave with pay to participate. 
  • This employer support may be recognised by the council in some appropriate way as agreed by the council. 
  • Where an employer does not wish to grant leave with pay then the member may make application to Te Taumata to request an allowance to cover lost earnings.
